Jeremiah 45-46
“Why have your mighty ones become prostrate? They do not stand because the Lord has thrust them down” (46:15). Egypt had dominated a huge part of the world for centuries; it seemed invincible. When the growing power of Babylon threatened Israel, they turned to Egypt for protection. Egypt symbolized the best that the world could produce: their art, science, military, commercial and public organization were extraordinary. But Jeremiah proclaimed that Egypt would fall, and it did.
Real safety is only found in God’s hands. There, God’s people are “undisturbed and secure, with no one making [them] tremble” (46:27).
