Psalm 49
“Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor together” (v2). The psalmist’s world, like ours, was divided between rich and poor. The rich congratulated themselves and were admired by other people (v18). But everyone dies; we are “like the beasts that perish” (v20), and our possessions cannot save us. The redemption of our souls is “costly” – and all the wealth in the world is useless (v8).
“But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol” (v15). Our economic future might be uncertain, but we are perfectly secure in the hands of our Redeemer.
