Ruth 1
“Now it came about in the days when the judges governed …” (v1). This statement firmly places Ruth’s story in the same period as the book of Judges, that time of violence, chaos, and immorality. But instead of more “every person did what was right in their own eyes” morality, we are introduced to Ruth. With her first words, this young, non-Jewish widow demonstrated the unselfish love so lacking in the previous stories. “Where you go, I will go” (v16).
Instead of doing what was normal, Ruth chose to do what was right. Her words and actions shone God’s light in the darkness.
