John 8:31-59

“We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never yet been enslaved to anyone” (v33).  This obviously false statement sounds familiar.  The Jews had been slaves in Egypt, and later were dominated by Babylonians, Persians, and Romans.   In fact, they had seldom been truly free.  But their statement sounds familiar, because our human pride loves to insist that we are free, we can determine our own future, and we can save ourselves.  We hate to admit that we are slaves to sin.

“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (v32).  Freedom, health, and joy begin with accepting the truth about ourselves and our Redeemer.
