I Samuel 20-23
“And Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David at Horesh, and encouraged him in God” (23:16). King Saul, anointed by God, was insecure about his position and reacted to David’s victories with raging jealousy. However, his son Jonathan (heir to the throne) was the one actually threatened by David’s popularity (20:31). Yet Jonathan only loved, supported, and encouraged David. He admired David’s faith and courage and cheerfully gave up his own possible crown (20:13-17).
More than simply not competing against David, Jonathan encouraged him “in God.” Instead of stirring up David’s anger, Jonathan strengthened his friend’s faith.
