Psalm 51
"According to the greatness of Thy compassion blot out my transgressions" (v1). This psalm has historically been our pattern for repentance. There are no excuses, no defenses; the psalmist appeals to God's mercy alone. He realizes that his sin offends God (v4), and only God can cleanse him (v7). The sinner yearns for more than forgiveness; he wants change. "Create in me a clean heart ... renew a steadfast spirit within me" (v10).
This is the prayer God always answers. He always accepts "a broken and a contrite heart," (v17) lovingly restoring us by grace.
