I Samuel 24-26
“Blessed be the Lord, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach … and kept back His servant from evil” (25:39). David and his men had been scorned and humiliated, and David was seeking revenge (somewhat justified, in those days). But Abigail stepped forward, offering gifts and words which restrained David’s anger (v23-31). She persuaded David to let God take care of his enemies (v29), rather than avenge himself. Sure enough, “the Lord struck Nabal” (v38).
Hot reactions seeking to justify ourselves usually lead to more conflict, angry words, and actions we regret. Wisdom from God is “peacable, gentle, reasonable” (James 3:17).
