September 4: Psalm 116

Psalm 116

“Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live” (v2).  This psalm revisits Psalm 18, which describes the psalmist’s near-death experience and how God rescued him.  “The cords of death encompassed me … then I called upon the name of the Lord” (v4).  Ever since, the psalmist said, he trusted God in the face of danger or trouble.

Part of faith is remembering.  Whenever anxiety or fear threatened, the psalmist remembered the past and knew the remedy: “Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you” (v7).
