Psalm 47
“The princes of the earth have assembled themselves as the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God” (v9). This is one of the many psalms that exalt God as “a great king over all the earth” (v2). He is the God of Israel, certainly, “whom He loves” (v4), but ultimately deserves to be praised by “the nations” (v8). The psalmist envisioned the day when “the princes of the earth” were united with “the people of Abraham” – by faith.
The strength of each tribe, nation, and culture (each shield) is redeemed when we are gathered into God’s family.
