September 7: John 4

John 4

“An hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth” (v23).  Humans have always worshiped gods of certain places.  The Jews knew that God was King of all the earth, yet they still worshipped Him in a certain place, just as the Samaritans clung to “their mountain.”  This human preference for our own culture, language, and place made Jesus’ statement radical: “neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father” (v21)

Embracing God’s love for the world, instead of idolizing our own culture, is worshiping the Father in “spirit and truth.”
