Jeremiah 38-39
“My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah …” (38:9). Ebed-melech, the Ethiopian servant, heard that the prophet had been put down a well. At great risk, Ebed-melech petitioned to rescue Jeremiah, and he brought him out of the well with care (v11-13). Then the king secretly questioned Jeremiah again, hoping to hear something different than a call to repentance. Jeremiah simply repeated God’s words (v17-18).
Ebed-melech trusted God and risked his life, while the king ignored God (with terrible consequences, ch 39). When God’s word is declared, we all face the same question: whose side are we on?
