“Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” (v3). The men who joined David’s band lived in fear, and now David was asking them to go to battle against the Philistines. They had to decide whether or not they would stay with David in precarious circumstances and whether they would go wherever God was leading them (v9-13). They had to consider whether living like fugitives was worth being on David’s side.
“And they went wherever they could go” (v13). We are called to trust God in difficult and uncertain circumstances, even when life is messy, because He is the only King worth serving.
