“So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church” (v5). In the first generations after Christ, believers would have related to the martyrdom of James (v2); they too were living through terrible persecution. Rather than giving up, however, they would have been encouraged to keep praying for deliverance, just as the church did for Peter. Peter’s miraculous release from prison reminds us to be steadfast in prayer, trusting in God’s power and His wisdom.
“Then he departed and went to another place” (v17). We don’t fear death, yet we embrace life. If, like Peter, we are miraculously delivered, it is so that we can serve God a little longer on earth.
