“Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom” (v22). Solomon’s relatively brief reign of peace, unity, and prosperity (40 years) attracted other global leaders. The “kings of the earth” sought the wisdom that “God had put into his mind” (v23), and the queen of Sheba famously tested Solomon with questions. Solomon received gold, silver, and exotic treasures and enjoyed domestic peace and strong alliances. For a moment, “justice and righteousness” seemed to prevail (v8).
“Because your God loved Israel and would establish them forever …” (v8). Solomon’s brief and imperfect reign hinted at the real destiny of God’s people. Our citizenship is in the beautiful kingdom of the Messiah, which endures forever.
