“If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing” (v3). Paul made the shocking statement that big sacrifices, including martyrdom, are of no value without love. Speaking in tongues, prophetic wisdom, and great faith are all “nothing” without love (v1-2). Rather than some abstract, spiritual love, Paul then describes the kind of love that makes a difference in our relationships: “love is patient and kind …does not envy or boast … is not arrogant or rude” (v4-5).
“If I have all faith, but have not love, I am nothing (v2). Right belief is only valuable if our hearts overflow with genuine, Jesus-inspired love.
