“He has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end” (v11). The Preacher faced the human paradox: We long to understand our own existence, but we “cannot find out” the truth apart from God. Because we are created in His image, (“eternity in our hearts”), simply having food and shelter is never enough. We want significance and joy; we want to know why we are here and where we are going.
“Whatever God does endures forever” (v14). God wants to restore our identities as His children, citizens of His kingdom, so that in Him we experience abundant and eternal life.
