“Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste” (v14). Isaiah prophesied that the famed Phoenician/Canaanite trading empire, with its wealthy Mediterranean city states like Tyre, Sidon, and Tarshish, would collapse. Tyre was the “merchant of the nations,” sending out ships that crisscrossed the sea with goods and materials (v3), “whose traders were the honored of the earth” (v8). But all this fame and wealth and history would come to an end when God decided to humble them.
“The Lord of hosts has purposed it” (v9). Success and pride can blind us to God’s purposes in the world. He is the only true King, and all we have is from Him and for Him.
