“Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus” (17:3). Peter, James, and John saw Jesus’ transfiguration – his face “shone like the sun” – and understood that Jesus was in the company of the great prophets, Moses and Elijah. But then they heard God say, “This is my Son … listen to him!” (17:5) and began to understand that the Messiah would do more than call for obedience to the Law. He came to set up a new kingdom and to call every person to make a choice.
Only if we “become like little children” can we belong to Jesus’ kingdom (18:3). He welcomes the humble, those seeking forgiveness, and those who hunger after righteousness.
